Revenue recognition

Most companies record sales well before cash is received, sometimes months in advance. In certain instances, companies receive advance payments before revenue is recognized (e.g., percentage of completion contracts, pre-need services) and these timing differences can raise accounting and motivational issues. Also, how receivables become deemed uncollectible is subject to judgment and estimation which can undermine confidence in the resulting measure of performance.
