{"id":86,"date":"2007-07-09T14:15:04","date_gmt":"2007-07-09T22:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/?p=86"},"modified":"2007-07-09T14:15:04","modified_gmt":"2007-07-09T22:15:04","slug":"the-un-and-good-governance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/the-un-and-good-governance\/","title":{"rendered":"The UN and good governance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you wanted to enhance the credibility of the teaching of good governance, wouldn&#8217;t you go to an organization like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2007\/07\/06\/un-responsibility-education-lead-citizen-cx_sm_0706bized.html?partner=daily_newsletter\">U.N.<\/a>?  Of course.  That is why the U.N. has endorsed certain guidelines for business school education such as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unglobalcompact.org\/AboutTheGC\/TheTenPrinciples\/index.html\">United Nations Global Compact<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since I think the U.N. should be taken at its word, I have begun to think about cases that can be used to teach these principles. For example, Principles 1 and 2: &#8220;Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses&#8221; could be illustrated with examples of how the U.N. has built <em>its<\/em> organizational capability to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsf.org\/article.php3?id_article=7620\">clean up<\/a> human rights abuses. Or Principle #10: &#8220;Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery&#8221; could be illustrated with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/Depts\/oip\/background\/index.html\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gee, if I wasn&#8217;t so busy preparing for <a href=\"http:\/\/w4.stern.nyu.edu\/registrar\/courseinfo.cfm?doc_id=648\">my course<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hodakvalue.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/enron_scandal_is_up.html\">corporate scandals<\/a>, I&#8217;m sure I could dig up lots of examples of U.N. initiatives to illustrate <em>good<\/em> governance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you wanted to enhance the credibility of the teaching of good governance, wouldn&#8217;t you go to an organization like the U.N.?
