{"id":2302,"date":"2010-03-18T16:36:18","date_gmt":"2010-03-19T00:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/?p=2302"},"modified":"2010-03-18T16:36:18","modified_gmt":"2010-03-19T00:36:18","slug":"bonuses-in-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/bonuses-in-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonuses in government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The headline and sub-title read:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Govt rewarded bank auditors with big bonuses:\u00a0 As  banks binged on risky mortgages, govt rewarded regulators with  taxpayer-funded bonuses<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wow, this sounds like it&#8217;s gonna be good!\u00a0 Their bonuses were funded by <em>taxpayers<\/em>!\u00a0 And we didn&#8217;t get to vote on them!\u00a0 So, how much did these Wall Street overseers earn?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>During the 2003-06 boom, the three agencies that supervise most U.S.  banks &#8212; the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the Office of Thrift  Supervision and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency &#8212; gave  out at least $19 million in bonuses, records show.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh.\u00a0 What does that come out to per employee?\u00a0 Like $350?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Some government regulators got tens of thousands of dollars in perks,  boosting their salaries by almost 25 percent. Often, though, rewards  amounted to just a few hundred dollars for employees who came up with  good ideas.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>OK.\u00a0 So, these bonuses went to the examiners who&#8217;s banks failed, when the signs were obvious at the time, right?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Because most bank inspection records are not public and the government  blacked out many of the employee names before releasing the bonus data,  it&#8217;s impossible to determine how many auditors got bonuses despite  working on major banks that failed<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;In retrospect, a stronger supervisory response at earlier  examinations may have been prudent,&#8221; FDIC&#8217;s inspector general concluded.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In retrospect.\u00a0 I see.\u00a0 This is my favorite part:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In government, as on Wall Street, bonuses are part of the culture.  Federal employees can get extra pay for innovative ideas, recruiting new  talent or performing exceptional work.
