That&#8217;s higher than Russia or China.  Higher even than Cuba or Zimbabwe.  Higher than any other nation, big or small, democratic or despotic.  We have over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headlines06\/1209-01.htm\">one quarter<\/a> of the world&#8217;s prison population.  Thanks <a href=\"http:\/\/biden.senate.gov\/committee\/drugcaucus.cfm\">drug<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov\/news\/press07\/110807.html\"> warriors<\/a>.    Way to go, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugpolicy.org\/drugwar\/mandatorymin\/\">Congress<\/a>!  Thanks Justices <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/wp\/uncategorized\/commentary-justice-kennedy-and-the-war-on-drugs\/\">Kennedy<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cato.org\/pub_display.php?pub_id=3813\">Scalia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When breaking the law becomes so easy that one percent of your population is in jail, it erodes respect for the law.  This statistic does not suggest that we have too many lawbreakers&#8211;it suggests we have too many laws.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One in 100 Americans are now in prison.
