{"id":1844,"date":"2009-09-08T06:25:49","date_gmt":"2009-09-08T14:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/?p=1844"},"modified":"2009-09-08T06:42:52","modified_gmt":"2009-09-08T14:42:52","slug":"two-conversations-about-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/two-conversations-about-compensation\/","title":{"rendered":"Two conversations about compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People reading the news may be forgiven for thinking that we are having a kind of national conversation about executive compensation.\u00a0 In fact, we are having two conversations.\u00a0 One of them is about corporate governance.\u00a0 The other is about wealth redistribution by non-market means.\u00a0 Both of them sound like they&#8217;re about compensation because the word is used often in the story, but they are different.<\/p>\n<p>Take this item headlined:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/tech-ticker\/article\/317722\/Warning-Pay-Gap-Between-CEOs-and-Workers-Will-Keep-Growing?tickers=dia,spy,jpm,xlf,bac,c,wfc\">Warning: Pay Gap Between CEOs and Workers Will Keep Growing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is nominally about compensation.\u00a0 It has the words &#8220;CEO&#8221; and &#8220;pay&#8221; in it.\u00a0 In fact, this is a story about a study released by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ips-dc.org\/\">Institute of Policy Studies<\/a>, which is a progressive organization dedicated to revamping society along socialistic lines.\u00a0 They simply hate the idea that some people make a lot more than others.\u00a0 Governance is simply a side show for them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Governance problems do need to be resolved,&#8221; notes IPS Director John Cavanagh. &#8220;But unless we also address more fundamental questions &#8211; about the overall size of executive pay, about the gap between the rewards that executives and workers are receiving &#8211; the executive pay bubble will most likely continue to inflate.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about the size of pay.\u00a0 A colleague of Cavanagh <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ips-dc.org\/articles\/the_ceo_pay_debate_why_reform_is_going_nowhere\">wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Shareholders have no reason to begrudge executives like these their fortunes.
