{"id":1449,"date":"2009-06-14T14:51:59","date_gmt":"2009-06-14T22:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2009-06-18T12:16:53","modified_gmt":"2009-06-18T20:16:53","slug":"practical-definition-poach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hodakvalue.com\/blog\/practical-definition-poach\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical definition:  Poach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The WSJ headline is:\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB124485634480511841.html\">Southern States Poach Business Amid Downturn<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kind of conjures up some southern hick with a shotgun sneaking up on someone&#8217;s farm, and leading away some cattle in the dead of night.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t seem to conjure up decades of rustbelt politicians sucking the life out of their businesses with ever-increasing taxes, and workplace regulations flowing from their capitals like topsy.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t evoke geographic and jurisdictional competition, with entrepreneurs and corporate managers coolly poring over spreadsheets deciding where to invest their scarce capital.<\/p>\n<p>Would a southern newspaper use the word &#8220;poach&#8221; to describe competition for capital in this context?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think so.\u00a0 It used to be that you could expect such anti-business wordsmithing from the New York Times.\u00a0 But we see <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/portal\/ucla\/Media-Bias-Is-Real-Finds-UCLA-6664.aspx\">just as well<\/a> on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The WSJ headline is:\u00a0 &#8220;Southern States Poach Business Amid Downturn&#8221; Kind of conjures up some southern hick with a shotgun sneaking up on someone&#8217;s farm, and leading away some cattle in the dead of night.
