Just check out the responses to her posts.  Part of the problem is that she is speaking in a slightly different language from that of The Atlantic&#8217;s normal readers.  So, here are some basic definitions of certain terms that appear to be causing at least some of the confusion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-interest:<\/strong> You doing what you want to do.<br \/>\n<strong>Enlightened self-interest<\/strong>:  You doing what I want you to do.<br \/>\n<strong>Social contract:<\/strong> Those with political power telling everyone else what to do.<\/p>\n<p>Contrast the last definition with this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brute-force collectivism:<\/strong> Those with political power telling everyone else what to do.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that helps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Megan McArdle has really stepped into the collectivist swamp in her new gig at The Atlantic.
